How to choose a painter in Wellington

There is no painter licence

Painting and decorating is not a licensed trade in New Zealand. Industry membership, for example Master Painters New Zealand, is voluntary. Ask about it if it matters to you, but don't treat it as a licence.

Ask about preparation

Ask what preparation is included, such as washing, sanding, filling and priming, and which paint system and how many coats they plan to use.

Older homes and lead paint

Houses built before the 1980s may have lead-based paint. Ask the painter how they test for it and how they will contain dust and debris if they find it.

Get it in writing

Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like. Ask whether the quote includes ladders or scaffolding, and what the business will guarantee.

Your consumer rights

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.

How we picked these

  • Data: each business's Google rating and number of Google reviews, read by hand from Google Maps. Every card shows the date we read it.
  • Score: everyone is scored the same way. The sum is score = (v ÷ (v + 20)) × R + (20 ÷ (v + 20)) × C, where R is the rating, v the review count and C the average rating across all painters we've rated (4.97). A few perfect reviews can't beat hundreds of very good ones.
  • Minimum: at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then alphabetical.
  • Licence check: there's no licence register for this trade, so ranking is on review data alone.
  • This list: 10 businesses researched, 9 with a Google rating found, 9 ranked.

FAQ

Do painters in Wellington need a licence?

No. Painting is not a licensed trade in New Zealand. Industry membership, such as Master Painters New Zealand, is voluntary. Ask about guarantees and get a written quote.

How much does a painter cost in Wellington?

Prices depend on the job, materials and timing, so we don't publish a single figure. Ask two or three businesses for written quotes that set out what is included, and compare like with like.

How did you choose these businesses?

We rank businesses on their Google rating and number of Google reviews, using a weighted average that rewards many good reviews over a few perfect ones. A business needs at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. The full formula is on our How we rank page.

Do businesses pay to be on this list?

No. No business can pay to be listed or ranked, and we do not use affiliate links.

I run one of these businesses. How do I correct something?

Corrections are free. Use the contact page to tell us what is wrong and how we can check it, and we will review it.
