How to choose a plumber in Wellington

Check they are authorised

In New Zealand, sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying must be done by people authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), or by someone working under their supervision. You can search the PGDB public register by name or registration number, and you can ask the person who turns up to show their PGDB card.

Know the difference between the trades

Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are separate authorisations. If your job involves gas appliances or drains as well as water pipes, ask whether the business holds each type or will bring in someone who does.

Get it in writing

Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like. For urgent call-outs, ask how the call-out fee and hourly rate work before the plumber starts.

Ask about paperwork

Some plumbing and drainage work needs a building consent from your council. Ask the plumber whether your job does, and keep any certificates or records of the work they give you.

Your consumer rights

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.

How we picked these

  • Data: each business's Google rating and number of Google reviews, read by hand from Google Maps. Every card shows the date we read it.
  • Score: everyone is scored the same way. The sum is score = (v ÷ (v + 20)) × R + (20 ÷ (v + 20)) × C, where R is the rating, v the review count and C the average rating across all plumbers we've rated (4.82). A few perfect reviews can't beat hundreds of very good ones.
  • Minimum: at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then alphabetical.
  • Licence check: we only rank plumbers whose licence we've confirmed on the PGDB register. Where we can't confirm a clear match yet, the business is shown as "Licence not yet verified" and isn't ranked. That doesn't mean anything is wrong.
  • This list: 10 businesses researched, 9 with a Google rating found, 7 ranked.

FAQ

How do I check a plumber in Wellington is licensed?

Search the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) public register at pgdb.co.nz by the person's name or registration number. The register shows which authorisations they hold, such as plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying.

How much does a plumber cost in Wellington?

Prices depend on the job, materials and timing, so we don't publish a single figure. Ask two or three businesses for written quotes that set out what is included, and compare like with like.

How did you choose these businesses?

We rank businesses on their Google rating and number of Google reviews, using a weighted average that rewards many good reviews over a few perfect ones. A business needs at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked, and we only rank it once we have confirmed its licence on the official register. The full formula is on our How we rank page.

Do businesses pay to be on this list?

No. No business can pay to be listed or ranked, and we do not use affiliate links.

I run one of these businesses. How do I correct something?

Corrections are free. Use the contact page to tell us what is wrong and how we can check it, and we will review it.
