In New Zealand, sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying must be done by people authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), or by someone working under their supervision. You can search the PGDB public register by name or registration number, and you can ask the person who turns up to show their PGDB card.
Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are separate authorisations. If your job involves gas appliances or drains as well as water pipes, ask whether the business holds each type or will bring in someone who does.
Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like. For urgent call-outs, ask how the call-out fee and hourly rate work before the plumber starts.
Some plumbing and drainage work needs a building consent from your council. Ask the plumber whether your job does, and keep any certificates or records of the work they give you.
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.

Search the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) public register at pgdb.co.nz by the person's name or registration number. The register shows which authorisations they hold, such as plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying.
Prices depend on the job, materials and timing, so we don't publish a single figure. Ask two or three businesses for written quotes that set out what is included, and compare like with like.
We rank businesses on their Google rating and number of Google reviews, using a weighted average that rewards many good reviews over a few perfect ones.
