How to choose a panel beater in Wellington

Check your insurance policy first

If you are claiming on insurance, read your policy or talk to your insurer about which repairers you can use and how the repair will be authorised.

Ask about memberships and approvals

There is no licence for panel beaters in New Zealand. Some belong to industry bodies such as the Collision Repair Association, and some are approved repairers for particular insurers. Ask the business which apply, and check with the body or insurer if it matters to you.

Ask about the repair

Ask whether parts will be new genuine, new aftermarket or used, how paint colour will be matched, and what guarantee is given on the repair and paintwork.

Get it in writing

Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like.

Your consumer rights

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.

How we picked these

  • Data: each business's Google rating and number of Google reviews, read by hand from Google Maps. Every card shows the date we read it.
  • Score: everyone is scored the same way. The sum is score = (v ÷ (v + 20)) × R + (20 ÷ (v + 20)) × C, where R is the rating, v the review count and C the average rating across all panel beaters we've rated (4.75). A few perfect reviews can't beat hundreds of very good ones.
  • Minimum: at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then alphabetical.
  • Licence check: there's no licence register for this trade, so ranking is on review data alone.
  • This list: 8 businesses researched, 8 with a Google rating found, 8 ranked.

No. There is no licence for panel beaters in New Zealand. Industry membership and insurer approval are voluntary, so ask the business which apply and check your insurance policy before booking.
