How to choose a mechanic in Wellington
WOF inspections need an authorised inspector
Warrant of Fitness inspections can only be done by inspecting organisations and inspectors authorised by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. If you need a WOF, check the workshop is authorised to issue one.
Memberships are voluntary
There is no licence for general mechanics in New Zealand. Membership of the Motor Trade Association (MTA) is voluntary. Ask about it if it matters to you.
Ask before extra work is done
Ask the workshop to contact you for approval before doing any work beyond what you booked, and to tell you which parts they will use.
Get it in writing
Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like.
Your consumer rights
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.
