How to choose a moving company in Auckland

There is no mover licence

Moving companies in New Zealand don't need a specific licence. Check the business name on the Companies Office register, read recent reviews, and ask how long the business has been operating.

Ask about liability and insurance

By default, a carrier's liability for loss or damage is limited under the Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017 unless you agree otherwise. Ask what cover the mover offers, what it costs and what it excludes, and check whether your own contents policy covers goods in transit.

Get it in writing

Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like. Ask whether the price is fixed or charged by the hour, and whether packing materials, stairs, travel time or storage cost extra.

Book early for busy dates

Ask for the booking terms, including any deposit and the cancellation or change policy, before you commit.

How we picked these

  • Data: each business's Google rating and number of Google reviews, read by hand from Google Maps. Every card shows the date we read it.
  • Score: everyone is scored the same way. The sum is score = (v ÷ (v + 20)) × R + (20 ÷ (v + 20)) × C, where R is the rating, v the review count and C the average rating across all movers we've rated (4.84). A few perfect reviews can't beat hundreds of very good ones.
  • Minimum: at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then alphabetical.
  • Licence check: there's no licence register for this trade, so ranking is on review data alone.
  • This list: 10 businesses researched, 9 with a Google rating found, 9 ranked.

FAQ

Do moving companies in Auckland need a licence?

No specific licence is required for removal companies in New Zealand. Check the business on the Companies Office register, read recent reviews and ask what liability cover is included.

How much does a moving company cost in Auckland?

Prices depend on the job, materials and timing, so we don't publish a single figure. Ask two or three businesses for written quotes that set out what is included, and compare like with like.

How did you choose these businesses?

We rank businesses on their Google rating and number of Google reviews, using a weighted average that rewards many good reviews over a few perfect ones. A business needs at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. The full formula is on our How we rank page.

Do businesses pay to be on this list?

No. No business can pay to be listed or ranked, and we do not use affiliate links.

I run one of these businesses. How do I correct something?

Corrections are free. Use the contact page to tell us what is wrong and how we can check it, and we will review it.
