How to choose an electrician in Whangārei
Check registration and a current practising licence
Electricians in New Zealand must be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) and hold a current practising licence. You can check a person on the EWRB public register by name or licence number.
Ask for the certificate
For most electrical work in homes, the electrician must give you a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) when the job is done. Keep it with your property records, as it may be useful for insurance or when you sell.
Get it in writing
Ask at least two or three businesses for a written quote that lists what is included, what is excluded and how variations are priced, and compare like with like.
Match the job to the business
Some electricians focus on new builds, others on repairs, rewiring, heat pumps, solar or commercial work. Check that the business does the type of work you need.
Your consumer rights
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, services you buy for personal use must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time if no time is agreed, and be fit for the purpose you made known.
How we picked these
- Data: each business's Google rating and number of Google reviews, read by hand from Google Maps. Every card shows the date we read it.
- Score: everyone is scored the same way. The sum is
score = (v ÷ (v + 20)) × R + (20 ÷ (v + 20)) × C, where R is the rating, v the review count and C the average rating across all electricians we've rated (4.92). A few perfect reviews can't beat hundreds of very good ones. - Minimum: at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then alphabetical.
- Licence check: we only rank electricians whose licence we've confirmed on the EWRB register. Where we can't confirm a clear match yet, the business is shown as "Licence not yet verified" and isn't ranked. That doesn't mean anything is wrong.
- This list: 10 businesses researched, 9 with a Google rating found, 5 ranked.

FAQ
How do I check an electrician in Whangārei is registered?
Search the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) public register at ewrb.govt.nz. It shows whether the person is registered and holds a current practising licence.
How much does a electrician cost in Whangārei?
Prices depend on the job, materials and timing, so we don't publish a single figure. Ask two or three businesses for written quotes that set out what is included, and compare like with like.
How did you choose these businesses?
We rank businesses on their Google rating and number of Google reviews, using a weighted average that rewards many good reviews over a few perfect ones. A business needs at least 15 Google reviews to be ranked, and we only rank it once we have confirmed its licence on the official register. The full formula is on our How we rank page.
Do businesses pay to be on this list?
No. No business can pay to be listed or ranked, and we do not use affiliate links.
I run one of these businesses. How do I correct something?
Corrections are free. Use the contact page to tell us what is wrong and how we can check it, and we will review it.
